Success for special needs children in their California classrooms

On Behalf of | May 6, 2021 | IEP |

Due to certain physical or mental limitations, some California students may struggle in school. Children with disabilities often benefit from specific types of interventions, such as specialized learning plans and other types of support. Regardless of need or the severity of their disability, all students deserve the opportunity for success in their classrooms.

Steps for success

One of the most important tools for students with special education needs is an Individualized Education Program (IEP). These are plans specifically tailored to the needs and abilities of the individual student. The school and teacher must abide by the terms of an IEP, providing reasonable accommodations where dictated. Other ways parents, educators and school systems can help unique learners include the following:

  • Seek early intervention and testing
  • Increase accessibility within the school and classroom
  • Educate the teachers and support staff on how to support these students
  • Provide resources to students and parents

With the right types of support and plans, students of all abilities can find success in school. Students with disabilities have the right to these additional resources to help them learn, grow and socialize properly at school.

What should parents do?

Parents of special needs students in California may benefit from the support and guidance of an experienced attorney. Schools and educators may not be providing the necessary supports to your child in their classroom. In these situations, legal action may be the most appropriate way to move forward if it is necessary to fight for the rights and interests of the student.
