How can technology help special education students?

When in school, students who have unique learning needs may benefit from additional support from teachers and other professionals. Through special education programming, students should be able to get the support and accommodations they need in order to succeed in the classroom. While there are different types of support available, the use of Assistive Technology (AT) is an important tool for California special education students of all needs and ability levels.

The benefits of assistive technology

Technology and its benefits in special education go far beyond just using a computer. AT can be greatly beneficial for students who have unique learning differences. For example, a voice amplification system, speech to text software and speech generating devices are a few practical and highly effective uses of technology for special education students.

Each special education student should have an Individualized Education Program (IEP), custom-tailored to the individual needs of the student. Experts say that schools should evaluate if AT could be useful for an individual student and how to best include it. Parents have the right to advocate for their children and to pursue everything they need for a full and fair educational experience.

Fighting for the rights of special ed students

Parents do not have to advocate for the rights of their students alone. An attorney experienced in special education law can provide insight into how to ensure that a California student is receiving everything they need and are entitled to in school. Oftentimes, parents benefit from seeking support if there are concerns regarding how their child is being educated.
