Assistive technology may be a crucial component of an IEP

On Behalf of | Feb 5, 2024 | IEP |

When a student has certain types of learning needs and challenges, they may be eligible for special education services. There is typically an initial assessment that evaluates a child’s needs to determine the specific types of help they require. After the assessment, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is created. An IEP outlines the types of services and support a California student needs, and assistive technology could be a critical part of a student’s educational plan.

What is assistive technology?

According to the U.S. Department of Education, assistive technology could be an important part of an IEP, and it should not be overlooked. Assistive technology can provide valuable help for students who may need additional support to have a full and fair educational experience.

Assistive technology may include supports such as the implementation of electronics, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices and more. Some experts believe that the use of this type of tech helps special education students develop valuable skills and make educational progress. The potential benefits of assistive technology should not be overlooked.

Development of an IEP

An IEP is a critical aspect of a child’s success as a special education student. A California parent may benefit from seeking guidance regarding the ways they can advocate for the specific types of support their child needs in school. This may include assistive technology, as well as the thoughtful implementation of other types of accommodations.
